It is difficult to decide whether to believe in evolution or not; but it is easy to conclude that I dislike it. Now, I do not here mean that I am offended by a particular theory of how men came about, or even a particular theory of how Man came about. In popular debate, it seems that one side is anxious to establish our ancestry from monkeys, while the other side proclaims our creation from mud, and neither set of great-grandparents, I must confess, swells my breast with pride. When I say I dislike evolution, I do really mean that I dislike evolutionists. I have no objections to monkeys becoming men; but I do strongly prefer that men do not behave like monkeys. And much of the New Atheist reading list does seem to me almost simian in its unthinking vitriol to its mythified enemy.

Here a note on the term ‘evolutionists’. In naming factions, one usually chooses a name that is meaningful, and usually a positive meaning. Royalists in previous conflicts would not have known what to think of one of their number who stood in their midst and declared that he was a royalist only in the strict and exact sense that he believed the royals existed. Nor do Republicans limit themselves to the declaration that republics have been thought of; instead one generally finds that they believe that republics should exist. More to the point, they believe that a republic should exist for them.

To that end, one might expect evolutionists not to stop at the proclamation that evolution is fact; one might perhaps expect them to proclaim Evolution a Good Thing. And in fact they do. This has been well-documented by minds more inquiring and eyes keener than mine, and when I have time to update this post I will keenly deplore this trend.
